My name is Martin. I’m 38 and from Dublin. 18 months ago I managed to tip the scales at an “impressive” 24 stone. What do we mean by “failure”? Well it obviously means different things to different people, but for most patients it means inadequate or disappointing weight loss. But again, what is disappointing to one person could be an outstanding success to another.
As a rough guide we can say that most studies of the gastric band show that average weight loss is around 50-55% of excess weight. This means that if you are 100lbs overweight, successful weight loss with a band would – on average – be 50-55lbs. Remember this is an average, so some will do much better and, unfortunately, some will do worse. From a clinical point of view, it’s generally accepted among surgeons and other specialists that if you have lost less than 25% of your excess weight, the procedure has failed. If you are 100lbs overweight, this equates to 25lbs or less.
So what are the main causes of band failure?
The table below shows some of the more common problems resulting in band failure and their causes.
Note that by far the most common causes are shown in the last column – fortunately these are usually easy to manage!

Mechanical causes are problems with the band itself these include:

In the majority of cases the primary reason for failing to lose weight with the band has nothing to do with mechanical problems with the device. It’s an inability to control calorie intake and a lack of physical activity.
Lifestyle causes are primarily related to poor nutrition (snacking, eating calorie-rich foods etc) and insufficient physical activity.
